Even though I am technically not yet an adult I have had a few adult experiences. Being an Impact student has really played a huge roll in my life by making me more mature and having a few adult responsibilities. Impact students have a lot to learn about responsibility, and time management probably faster than any other regular high school students. The reason being is that our high school teachers never babied us. They worked to prepare us for when it came time to take a college class on our own.
I remember my freshman year feeling like a slap in the face with all the work. Coming from a middle school where I had little to no homework nor responsibilities to worry about did not prepare me for Impact. Freshman year I remember being taught how to be organized, and responsible for your own behavior and actions. Avid was one of the main classes that helped us with learning things like how to take notes, be organized, take full responsibility for our grades and talking to our teacher's.
Having to manage college classes along with my high school classes, as a 15-year-old was a bit scary and stressful at first. Taking baby steps in being taught about responsibilities was like being taught to ride a bike. It starts off with someone spotting and taking care of you. Then, later you have to start doing it on all on your own. It is not easy starting off, but after time you start to get the hang of it.
Impact Early College High School and Lee College continue to influence me by making responsible choices. Choices like having to say no to hanging out with friends because I have a test or paper the next day. It sometimes feels difficult to know that I am sacrificing my teenage years and miss out on the typical "High School experience" to dedicate my time to school. I have definitely learned so much over the years of being an impact student. Not only learned to be organized and responsible, but to take advantage of all opportunities in life even if they may seem hard at first. I have learned to continue dreaming because with dedication anything is possible. Most importantly IMPACT and Lee College have thought me to have hope and stick to my goals because at the end of the day graduating with an Associates degree near the end of my senior year makes everything worth it.
I may have had a few adulthood expiriences, but as you can see I am still a jokester and child by heart.

I suspect your experiences as an IMPACT student are unlike those that most of us experience, but it is obvious that you are up for the challenge.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to your blog so much!! As an IMPACT student, I also had to adjust to our school but at the same time, I think it is similar to other high schools. And I know that you always be making responsible decisions because remember when you used to study in the library instead of playing pool being jokesters with us.
ReplyDeleteI applaud you IMPACT students. I understand from experience that college level courses at such a young age can be overwhelming and require a lot of sacrifices to ensure success. However you guys come out on top at the very end with an associates degree along with your diplomas. IMPACT is an amazing opportunity to receive as a middle school-er and though you might sacrifice the common high school experiences I'm positive it will all be worth it at the very end when your hard work and dedication pay off.
